Social Media and Privacy:
Rape
has become, to some people, not as serious as people once thought. There are
plenty of examples of people tweeting and posting things making fun of rape and
victims. Some people go as far as bragging that they committed the crime.
Sexual assaults use to be a very private thing. They were reported about 50% of
the time, and when they were reported it was really just a “he says” “she says”
case. Now because some of the sexual assaults are posted on the internet
through social media it builds more of a case against the criminal. But there
are draw backs. Because they are so public, there are many cases of the victims
taking their own lives. This is from basically everyone they know knowing and
sometimes those people even make fun of them. I personally don’t understand how
anyone could make fun of a victim of sexual assault or a victim of any crime.
I think that although social media builds more of a case against the criminal, there are other ways to get legal help without compromising the privacy and safety of the victim. Victims are taking their own lives because sexual assault is a very private and traumatizing thing. Having the whole world knowing about it through social media is just adding even more embarrassment and assault to the victim. Social media allows mean spirited people to have the option of creating and commenting on these videos and pictures of sexual assault, and that is also why social media can be so extremely detrimental.
